Swaythling delivered one of the very first successful conclusions to what the government hope will be 6,000 Mortgage Rescues in England over the next two years. The final completion of the rescue was the first in the South East of England.
Helen Freeman moved into her home in Basingstoke, Hampshire, 17 years ago. During this time she got married and started a family, with a 12 year old daughter and two young sons. Due to the breakdown of her marriage, Helen found herself in severe financial difficulties and was unable to continue paying the mortgage. Under threat of repossession from her lender, she turned to Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council (BDBC) to protect her family from homelessness.

Having been assessed as a suitable candidate for Mortgage Rescue, Basingstoke & Deane Housing Options team referred Helen’s case to Swaythling Housing Society for consideration. Swaythling Housing successfully completed the Mortgage Rescue for Helen and her young family.
“This is a great weight off my shoulders”, Helen commented, “I am very pleased that my family is now secure for our future”.
Mark Fisher, BDBC Specialist Housing Officer added, “Without a close working relationship between BDBC & Swaythling, it would not have been possible to overcome the obstacles within the time-frame required in order to avoid repossession of the property. Once the process was underway, Swaythling worked hard to ensure excellent communications between all the parties concerned whilst also maintaining a sensitive, supportive and caring approach towards our customer, which was critical to ensure their continued engagement.”
This successful rescue comes at a time when the government had come under fire for failing to deliver on their much-vaunted scheme. A spokesman said local councils were now actively considering applications for the scheme from more than 450 other families and insisted it had always been expected to take three months to get off the ground.
Lynda Lines, Sales and Marketing Manager, Swaythling said: “This case has involved a lot of cross-organisation working to ensure that it went ahead, with thanks going to all partners who helped to co-ordinate the rescue.”
